ImOn Announces Major Network Enhancement and Expansion
Company Invests Millions in New Internet Technology, Service Area Growth, Product Development and Local Jobs
ImOn Communications announced today the details of its multi-million dollar investment in new network technology, service area growth, and product development.
DOCSIS 3.0 Deployment Brings Fastest Internet to the Area
Today, ImOn launched its new super high-speed Internet product offering. ImOn’s Freedom Internet line is highlighted by Freedom 65, which offers download speeds of up to 65Mbps.
The new high-speed Internet service is the fastest available to residents of Cedar Rapids and Marion.
The high bandwidth speeds for Freedom 65 are achieved through the deployment of a new technology known as DOCSIS 3.0. This technology enables channel bonding, which allows one subscriber to utilize multiple Internet channels simultaneously to achieve significantly higher Internet capacity and faster speeds.
“Freedom 65 is a product made possible by the significant investments ImOn has made in our network infrastructure. Deployment of DOCSIS 3.0 represents a commitment to the Cedar Rapids and Marion communities to provide lightning fast Internet delivered via state-of-the-art network technology,” said Patrice Carroll, President and General Manager of ImOn Communications. “All our Internet customers will benefit from this upgrade, in terms of speed, quality and reliability.”
Freedom 65 comes with two free ancillary products - SecureIT Plus PC protection and Online Backup file storage software. Freedom 65 users will be equipped with a new, more robust modem built to accommodate higher Internet speeds associated with DOCSIS 3.0 technology.
The new Freedom product line focuses on providing higher overall download speeds to all ImOn customers. In addition to Freedom 65, the line also offers services with download speeds of 5Mbps, 15Mbps and 25Mbps. Freedom 25 comes with free Secure IT PC protection software.
Service Footprint Growth
Since starting the business in 2007, and despite being adversely affected by the flood, ImOn has added more than 2,000 homes to its service area.
ImOn’s current multi-million dollar investment includes plans to add several thousand more homes and businesses to its service area in 2010 and 2011, with continued growth planned for 2012 and beyond.
Expanding the service territory means extending ImOn’s current fiber rich network into more neighborhoods to bring competition and choice to consumers in Cedar Rapids and Marion.
ImOn services are delivered via a network configuration known as “fiber to the curb,” meaning that ImOn’s cable TV, high-speed Internet and phone are delivered via fiber optics the entire distance from the technology core to the utility pole or pedestal on the customer property.
Fiber to the curb networks are recognized by the cable TV, high-speed Internet and phone industries as the delivery model benchmark because of the reliability and signal strength capacities associated with fiber optic communication.
HD Channel Offering Continues to Grow
Responding to growing customer interest in HD programming, ImOn announced the addition of 10 new high definition channels to its cable TV offering, bringing its total HD channel count to 37.
Travel Channel HD (channel 824), Outdoor Channel HD (848), ABC Family HD (826), Fox News HD (887), FX HD (856), ESPNU HD (832), TruTV HD (872), Cartoon Network HD (836), Comcast SportsNet HD (844) and Comcast SportNet Plus HD(847) have been added.
ImOn plans to add another 8 HD channels by the end of 2010 and many more in 2011. High definition programming is available for free to all ImOn customers taking a level of service above basic cable.
Size of Local Workforce to Double
Because of continued growth, ImOn will have doubled the size of its workforce by the end of 2010. ImOn is headquartered and operated fully within Cedar Rapids and Marion. ImOn employs a very diverse workforce of various technical and professional positions.
“ImOn continues to execute its growth strategy. We’re investing millions of dollars to bring quality competition to the marketplace, create jobs for the community we serve and continue our long standing commitment to economic development” said Steve Gray, ImOn Chairman.
